Supplementation: Clearing the Confusion!

I often hear the common misconception that if we eat a lot of fruits and vegetables and have a balanced diet, we do not need supplements. While this would certainly be nice, it’s unfortunately far from the truth.  

Let’s look at what some of the most common misconceptions are that surround the use of supplements:

  • “I get enough nutrients from my diet”
  • “They don’t do what they say they do”
  • “My doctor would have told me that I needed to take them”
  • “I don’t have any serious health problems”
  • “I’m a vegan, I don’t need them!”
  • “I eat well and exercise regularly”

After reading the list, perhaps you can identify with one, or even two of them. As a health coach, I can tell you that you are not alone. With Primary Care physicians having minimal training in nutrition and lifestyle management, a lack of education in food in our schools, and the recent concern over quality and sourcing of supplement ingredients, it certainly makes sense. However, we are dealing with a health care system, food industry, and lifestyle choices that are not working!  

The US healthcare system spends a higher portion of its gross domestic product than any other country, but ranks 37 out of 191 countries according to its performance. We are NOT healthy! Our food sources, consumption and lifestyle have drastically changed and are wreaking havoc on our health in ways we never imagined.
